Intermatic has released a new short revisiting its Extra-Duty Die-Cast Weatherproof Covers, and the full test video behind it is worth a look: Intermatic ran the covers over with a truck, hit them with a flamethrower and fired a shotgun at them. The point is simple. An in-use cover on an outdoor receptacle takes abuse for years, and a cover that cracks, sags or stops latching leaves the receptacle open to water.

Built for receptacles that take a beating

The covers are die-cast aluminum, cover and mounting base alike, with UV-stabilized polycarbonate inserts. They are UL certified for Type 3R applications, and they meet the 2020 NEC Article 406.9(B)(1) requirement for extra-duty in-use covers in wet locations. Each cover ships with a neoprene gasket and uses a reinforced hinge pin, and the single-gang WP1010HMXD carries a cold-impact rating down to -60°F.

Lockable when the location calls for it

A lockable hasp accepts a padlock shank up to 1/4", which matters on jobsites, at schools and parks, and anywhere an outdoor receptacle should not be open to whoever walks by.

Where they fit

Intermatic positions the Extra-Duty line for industrial, commercial, agricultural and residential outdoor installs. Typical uses include receptacle protection on building exteriors, engine block heater outlets, and walk-in cooler and freezer receptacles, where cold and moisture work on a cover every day.
